Perfect Model-bodies, breathtaking stylish clothes, energetic catwalk-beats while the girls are working the runway like elegant cats of prey. What does a scenario like that make u think? Exactly: „It’s getting hot in here!“ But in times of global warming and social injustice „hot“ got redefined. People who want to be en vouge nowadays aren’t only fashionable, they are responsible as well. How? They’re wearing „fairtrade“. You feel like yawning? Yes, I do too – at least once I think of the Organic-Cotton-Collection which H&M has to offer. Those are boring basics that are good enough to take out the garbage. But hey – I discovered some good stuff out there, which will not only make u look hot, but also add u to this new society-crowd that „saves the world while being fashionable“…
Eco is everywhere. And ever since our favorite coffe shop Starbucks introduced the fairtrade caffeine rush, we do know we can’t escape. So we’re showing our obedience by eating bio-carrots, drinking soy-milk and decorating our bio-salad with fried bio-tofu.
Good enough!? Well I thought so. I’ve always been very sceptical when it comes to eco/fairtrade-fashion. For two simple reasons: First of all no one can seriously expect us to walk around like crazy hippies who just jumped out of the clothing drive. Second of all there are way too many wonderful clothes I’m craving for that are not eco. And even though greenpeace and all vegetarians will pull their knifes now – yes, there are wonderful leather-shoes and -bags as well. To be honest I even became a bit annoyed that nowadays it feels like you’re expected to save the world with everything you wear, eat and put on your body. C’mon – am I really supposed to feel miserable once I go for Lancome’s Color Fever Lipstick instead of the Body Shop’s Lip Balm which makes me believe I will save the planet from HIV? I don’t want to feel miserable, I want to feel wonderful!
„Wonderful“ – that’s where the real new eco-trend comes in. Because those days when eco equaled „ugly“ are long gone. A wonderful example for fashionable eco-clothes is the social-fashion-label „Armed Angels“ located in Kologne. The label of Anton Jurina and Martin Höfeler is selling unique Shirts, Sweaters and Hoodies at afordable prices. Young grafitti-artists and graphic designers from all over the world are contributing the designs. Anton Jurina knows the secret of the new eco-hype: „First you have to convince costumers with your style and desings before they start having an interest into the ethical aspects of clothes.“
Gaining Hollywood-Glamour is another reason why this new eco-wave got pushed so high: Once celebreties find something en vouge, it actually becomes en vouge. And there are many stars who are acting the „eco-role-model“. Orlando Bloom has been arriving in a hybrid-car at the Academy Awards, Natalie Portman is designing vegan shoes (highheels!) and Leonardo Di Caprio is planning a TV-Show called E-Topia. Celebrities like Jude Law, Chris Martin, Bono and Minnie Driver officially commited themselfes to fighting poverty. Chris Martin, Jude Law and Ewan McGregor explicitly said that they avoid sweatshops in favour of supporting fairtrade fashion.
If you ask me – fashion being based on a fairtrade is important. But do we really have to walk up to the store assistant, everytime we’ re holding some adorable dress in our hands, just to ask her how this piece has found its way into the store? Not really. Too much is too much. And chances are she wouldn’t know anyways. I won’t feel guilty once I buy a pretty dress (guilt only comes in if it did cost as much as a car) and i don’t know much more but it looking breathtaking. Still there are definitely some eco-designs that are worth to be checked out. So here you go:
